Mitotic Recombination Accelerates Adaptation in the Fungus Aspergillus nidulans

Understanding the prevalence of sexual reproduction in eukaryotes is a hard problem. At least two aspects still defy a fully satisfactory explanation, the functional significance of genetic recombination and the great variation among taxa in the relative lengths of the haploid and diploid phases in the sexual cycle. We have performed an experimental study to explore the specific advantages of h...

Haploidization in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Induced by a Deficiency in Homologous Recombination

Diploid Saccharomyes cerevisae strains lacking the RAD52 gene required for homologous recombination have a very high rate of chromosome loss. Two of four isolates subcultured ∼20 times (∼500 cell divisions) became haploid. These strains were capable of mating with wild-type haploids to produce diploid progeny capable of undergoing meiosis to produce four viable spores.

Allelic and ectopic interactions in recombination-defective yeast strains.

Ectopic recombination in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been investigated by examining the effects of mutations known to alter allelic recombination frequencies. A haploid yeast strain disomic for chromosome III was constructed in which allelic recombination can be monitored using leu2 heteroalleles on chromosome III and ectopic recombination can be monitored using ura3 heteroalleles on...

A common-AB diploid of Schizophyllum commune.

N Schizophyllum commune, a heterothallic basidiomycete, compatibility is con' trolled by two unlinked mating factors, A and B. Matings between two strains with dissimilar A and B factors (i.e. AI BI x A2 B2) result in the establishment of the dikaryon, tho secondary mycelium, which possesses two haploid nuclei per cell. The diploid phase, normally confined to the basidium borne on the dikarycm,...

A Stable Partial Diploid Strain of Escherichia Coli.

N 1949, LEDERBERG reported the discovery of an unusual partial diploid strain I in Escherichia coli K-12. Later studies (LEDERBERG, LEDERBERG, ZINDER and LIVELY 195 1 ; LEDERBERG 1951 ) with other partial diploid strains revealed that reduction to the haploid state always occurred in one step and at a high rate ( 5 to 10 percent per bacterium per generation). Recombination with retention of the...
